All Frills and No Knickers…

Yes, you read the title of this painting correctly (I’ll explain more in a bit)!

(As always, you need to click on the image to see the whole thing)

After completing my painting of doughnuts, I decided, that I wasn’t finished with painting yummy things just yet! I just loved capturing the texture of the inside of the doughnuts along with the gooey, oozy jam running down the side, and I wanted to paint something else, similar to that.

As I explained at the time though, I don’t like eating doughnuts, which is funny, because I don’t like drinking wine either and yet I paint a lot of that! So, this time, I thought I would paint something I would enjoy eating too, so I could devour it afterwards! I just needed to find the perfect subject.

The story behind the title…

As it happens, Paul and I spent a weekend in Soho, London. What better place to find a posh bakery with the prettiest cakes? There were so many to choose from! Anyway, we happened upon a gorgeous-looking bakery with a beautiful display of cupcakes in the window. It was there, that my eyes settled upon this exquisite-looking cupcake.

So, we bought two of them to take back to the apartment we were staying in, and that afternoon, I set about trying to get the best shot in the perfect light. It didn’t take long, and we put the cakes aside to eat a bit later after we had returned from our evening out.

Later, when we arrived back, we headed straight for the posh, pink and gold cake box! We couldn’t wait to taste them! We both took a bite of our cakes and looked at each other as we began to chew…. I think we both had the same expression, which was one of first, confusion and then …utter disappointment! They were not only, VERY bland, almost tasteless actually… but they also had the strangest rubbery texture!

Needless to say, what was left of the cupcakes went straight into the bin and as the box swiftly followed, it was only then, that I noticed a label, which said ‘VEGAN’ on the bottom. Well of course that explained it! I guess a vegan, who is not used to the delicious, rich taste of butter and cream, might indeed find this a delicious treat, however as a non-vegan, I definitely did not!

But, on the upside, from the disappointing taste, came this fun title, ‘All Frills and No Knickers!' To anyone unfamiliar with this term, to put it another way, it means, all style and no substance. But, since this cupcake is wearing such a fancy skirt, the title was staring me right in the face!

So… What’s next?

I have another canvas of the same size waiting for me, and whilst I had a clear idea in my head a while back, now I have other ideas floating around. So you’ll have to watch this space! Meanwhile, I will enjoy a couple of weeks away from the easel and play around in my sketchbook while I decide.
